Whispering Land

Alternatives of the landscape in Contemporary Hungarian and Israeli Art 6/Dec/2023 - 7/Jan/2024

Whispering Land – Alternatives of the landscape in Contemporary Hungarian and Israeli Art" exhibition is organized by the Hungarian Academy of Arts (MMA) and the MMA Institute for Art Theory and Methodology (MMA MMKI) in response to the cancellation of this year's Jerusalem Biennale due to the war. The exhibition opened on December 7, 2023, at the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest. Over the course of one month, the public will have the opportunity to view the works of thirty-eight artists, including twenty Israeli and eighteen Hungarian creators.

The solidarity exhibition in Budapest hosts one of the Biennale's displays, titled "Nof-Nof-Nof – Landscape in Contemporary Israeli Painting," in the Museum of Ethnography's first-floor exhibition hall. Curated by three Israelis and two Hungarians – Nechemia Boaz, Ofer Kahana, Victor Ryabchin, Tibor Kocsis, Avi Roth – the exhibition titled "Whispering Land" complements the original showcase of works by twenty Israeli artists with pieces from eighteen Hungarian artists. Together, they present traditional and alternative, contemporary interpretations of landscape depictions, ranging from plein-air painting to symbolic expressions and bordering on nature art.

The collaborative exhibition, featuring paintings, graphics, photos, and sculptures, affirms that ideas, reflections, and opinions belonging to different religions and generations come together as a unified whole with the concept of a desire for symbiosis. The message is clear: humanity yearns for peace and mutual acceptance. The Israeli and Hungarian artworks, organized into five thematic sections, reflect upon each other, creating a comprehensive, contemporary artistic landscape. This includes the orthodox, human-free, painted landscape as much as the eco-futuristic, dystopian representations of the land.
