Vilmos Dioszegi's photos of Mongolia, 1960.

24/Nov/2023 - 8/Dec/2023

On November 24, 2023, the temporary exhibition of Vilmos Diószegi opened in Mongolia, at the National Museum of Genghis Khan in Ulaanbaatar, which is the first solo exhibition of the Diószegi collection of 1he Hungarian Museum of Ethnography.

Vilmos Diószegi has become one of the best-known Hungarian ethnographers of the 20th century through his research on the beliefs of the conquering Hungarians and on South Siberian and Mongolian shamanism. His research and collections linked together Siberia, Mongolia and the Carpathian Basin, as well as the anthropological interests of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

He was one of the few people who could carry out fieldwork in Siberia and Mongolia during the socialist era. On his 1960 research trip to Mongolia, in addition to his museum collections, he made three field trips to Khentii, Dornod and Khövsgöl counties. He collected more than 100 shaman artefacts and took 800 black and white photographs.

The exhibition aims to present and recall the landscapes, people and collections visited by the Hungarian ethnographer in Northeastern and Northern Mongolia.

The exhibition is open until 8 December.
