Chair Pairs - Parovi Stolica

Joint exhibition in Zagreb by the Museum of Ethnography, Budapest and the Ethnographic Museum, Zagreb 24/Apr/2025 - 15/Jun/2025

From 24 April to 15 June 2025, the exhibition entitled Chair Pairs, which has already been presented with great success in Budapest, Veszprém, Mosonmagyaróvár, Bonyhád and Pécs, will be complemented with 27 chairs and their history from the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb. Presenting objects from the furniture collections of the two ethnographic museums and the chairs of the AU Workshop in an exciting environment, the exhibition creates a link, a dialogue, a creative mental space between the objects of the collection and their contemporary adaptations, reflecting on the creativity inherent in this object, its production and everyday use, which is still very important today.

Parallels can be drawn between the contemporary design objects and the artefacts from the collections displayed together in the exhibition space. Each chair is a distinct character, a carrier of a core idea. Most importantly, they are in dialogue with each other: they ask, they answer, they point, they replicate. The selection of objects in the museum ranges from prestige furniture for peasant households to furniture for everyday use.

The exhibition of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest's MaDok programme in Croatia will not only include furniture from the museum there, but will also shed new light on certain themes. One example is the three-legged stool, used by children and adults alike, which is still in use in some parts of the Dinari Mountains. We can see how this seating stool has been transformed over time into a richly decorated chair with a backrest. A particular highlight is the katriga chair on display, which stands out for its shape and the fact that there are still some craftsmen who make it today. The katriga is made using natural wood shapes: the seat and backrest are made from a single piece of wood, joined together with crosspieces. Two legs were attached to each side of the seat. And that's just one example - the exhibition of 19th and 20th century chairs from the collection of the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb provides a spectacular overview of the changes in everyday seating, with new types of chairs shaped by the demands of urban life.
