The Museum of Ethnography's 2024 FÉRC - SCRAP Project aims to give new life to the textiles released from the collections as a result of the museum's revision after its move. More than a hundred creative entries were received, of which three were selected by the jury.
The winner of the competition is Zsana Karakó's Lampala, a ring combining modern design and traditional techniques. "The symbol of the shield stands for protection, while the embroidery in the centre is a reminder of our Hungarian roots and past. This embroidery is not a museum piece, but it carries a deep meaning, as the folk art motifs emphasise the importance of belonging and togetherness. The work thus both points forward to the future through modern (3D printing) technology and looks back to the past through traditional motifs." - Zsana Karakó

Special prize was awarded to Zsófia Szász for her entry Rétegek - Layers. In Zsófia's series, the motifs of old artefacts coexist in layers with new forms thanks to the embroideries she creates.

A special prize was also awarded to Hanga Yosihara-Horváth for her creative and sustainable use of materials. Hanga's technique is repairing old embroidered textiles and utilitarian objects with visible stitching and mending them with knitted fabrics to make them usable again, emphasising their history.
The competition closed with a pop-up exhibition presenting the chosen pieces and can be found on display at the MÉTA space. The museum also plans to organise a redesign workshop, where the applicants will share their knowledge with interested participants.
