The Mountain of Myths exhibition presents a world never before seen in its entirety in Hungary, offering an insight into the ancient cultures of pre-Hispanic Mexico. The exhibition concept was developed by a museum expert with decades of experience in both curatorial work and field research. It features some of the finest pieces from the institution’s American archaeological collection. However, the core of the exhibition consists of more than two hundred artefacts, selected from four Mexican collections, as well as from the Dallas Museum of Art and the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin.
The exhibition showcases the distinctive archaeological finds of the four most significant Mexican civilisations—Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, and Aztec. It also explores one of their most defining cultural elements: the role of pyramids in their worldview, architecture, burial practices, and rituals. As part of this theme, three specific temple pyramids will be brought to life in Budapest, complemented by artefacts excavated from these sites, alongside objects representing the broader civilisations.
The exhibition will also feature striking visual elements designed to provide a captivating experience, even for the youngest visitors.
